If you’re like my husband, you’re just plain bored of store bought cards. This technique is his signature way of giving cards, and it’s fit for any occasion. He has been bold enough to use it for birthdays, anniversaries…even weddings! This past weekend, we tag-teamed on this card for his brother’s birthday.
A few things to keep in mind when picking a card to re-purpose…
1 – Sarcasm goes a long way. Pick themes that are strongly contrasted from the orginal intent. For Example, sympathy cards are great for birthdays (ie… sorry to hear <you’re turning 30>).
2 – Know your audience. Stick to close friends that you know would appreciate your spin on the card.
For Eric’s brother, the card that was selected was flowery and totally over-the-top. Yes, this card was a beauty. The original intent of this card was for a woman to her husband for their anniversary.
Card excerpt…
[Cover] For the Man Who Means the World to Us/Me
Today we/I want to tell you, Just how grateful we/I have been,
To share this happy birthday/life with you,
My brother/husband, brother-in-law/soulmate, friend.
You’re both the rock we/I lean on,
And our/my tender loving grace.
And nothing comforts us/me as much, as feeling your embrace…<–Especially Lately!
(This last phrase was so apropos! We recently told him that his hugs were wimpy, and since then he has made an extraordinary effort to give us bear hugs.)
And the result? A personalized card that should bring a smile to their face! Let us know how it turns out for you!
