Ideas to Turn your Everyday into An Exotic Adventure

Love Without Borders : Phoebe & Ronnie, Create "Many Many Adventures"

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT

Ronnie and Phoebe of Many Many Adventures.
Ronnie and Phoebe of Many Many Adventures.

Traveling has a way of testing your limits, at which point you must decide to either retreat or to grow and go where you've 'never gone before' figuratively and literally. It's being presented with constant change that you have to adapt to. We believe travel is so addictive precisely because of this quality. Now imagine falling in love while traveling? You're building a relationship with another person WHILE both of you are transcending personal boundaries. Sounds like a recipe for an international scale disaster... But, what if you've traveled together and instead of growing apart, grew closer together?

• • •

Today's love story is told by two adventurers Phoebe and Ronnie. Phoebe is from Australia and Ronnie is from the US. They met while traveling and together traversed many a continent. To share their stories and those of other travel lovers they've created Many Many Adventures, a beautiful site for travelers by travelers. There we can get inspired by recounts of incredible journeys not only to the ends of the world, but most importantly to the fringes of ourselves. Today, they share with us how they met, what it's like being in a multi-cultural relationship and how to stay zen in love and in life.

livelikeyouretraveling_phoebe_ronnie_manymanyadventures.jpg

{ LLYT: You two met while traveling. Honestly now, what were your very first impressions of each other? Why do you think you clicked? }

Ronnie: The first time we met we were both backpacking through Central America and ended up spending about 3 weeks together. I immediately had a crush on Phoebe, but she had a boyfriend at the time so nothing happened. And honestly, that was perfect. We were able to become such good friends that it opened up the possibility of us seeing each other in the future, when something could happen.

Phoebe: I was travelling in Central America with my little brother – it was our first time backpacking, and we were a little green to say the least. Since my brother was only 18, he was pretty overwhelmed by the combination of foreign languages, pretty girls and readily available alcohol. When Ronnie saw him standing in the supermarket holding a six pack of vodka-lemonade, he decided to become his mentor. So really, I just tagged along with them, as Ronnie showed Ben the ins and outs of being a man. I honestly thought he was a bit of a player, but he made me laugh.

When we were in Greece together, two years later, Ronnie showed me the diary entry he wrote the day we met, and the part about having a crush on me, and I started to think perhaps this could be more than just a travel romance…
livelikeyouretraveling_ronnie_phoebe_manymanyadventures.jpg

{ LLYT: Ronnie tell us about how you decided to actually make the move to Australia? Did you always know that you were 'destined' to live away from home or did you surprise yourself? }

Ronnie: Ha. That’s a very long and complicated answer, but I’ll try. I enjoy living in new places and the experience of that, so moving somewhere like Australia wasn’t a surprise to me, or anyone who knew me, at that point in my life. The fact that I decided to move to Australia to live with Phoebe just a week after we were in Thailand together and had decided to end our relationship, well, that was a bit more unexpected.

Phoebe: Yeah, that was probably my fault. I took a little convincing that this thing could actually work!

{ LLYT: Now, the trickiest part of any relationship is communicating. Phoebe tell us, even though both of you are native English speakers, being from different continents do you find that you have to try "harder" to understand what the other says? }

Phoebe: There are definitely times when I have to remind myself that Ronnie grew up in a different culture. My family is from England, so even though I grew up in Australia, where people are generally very open, I have a bit of that British reticence and propriety in the way I say things – excuse me...thank you...would it be ok if...I think that maybe…you know what I mean. In my experience, Americans can be a lot blunter in their communications, so there have been moments when I've been pissed off at the way Ronnie says something when he is just being honest.

Other than that, anyone who has tried to have a long distance relationship will tell you how much text communications suck. Ronnie once commented on how cute my “nerdiness” was…which auto-corrected to “neediness”… which resulted in some serious radio silence on my part until we figured it out.

livelikeyouretraveling_ronnie_phoebe_manymanyadventures.jpg

{ LLYT: You guys travel a lot, is there any moment in particular that really stands out as "Wow, I can't believe we're actually here" moment? }

Phoebe: Ton Sai, Thailand, November, 2012. It was the end of eight months of travelling for me, and my last stop before home. We had just done four months of long distance, and we had come so close to calling it quits so many times, that it was surreal to be in the same time zone, let alone staying in the same bamboo hut. We had such a magical two weeks there, climbing, laying on the beach, eating amazing food. It was supposed to be our last hurrah, but it ended up convincing us (well, me) that we could actually make this work. Three days after we said goodbye in Thailand we made plans for Ronnie to move here.

Ronnie: I feel a rush of excitement and gratitude every time I get off an airplane, but mostly that’s because I’m afraid of heights and get pretty bad motion sickness.

{ LLYT: When you are not on the road, what do you like to do to keep your wanderlust satisfied? }

Ronnie: For me, living in a different country right now, it’s all a little bit like traveling. There’s always new places to explore or something new to experience. And because traveling is such a big part of our life, there’s always a trip right around the corner. We just got back from doing a van trip around New Zealand last month. Next month we’re moving to Chicago. And we’re going to spend Christmas this year in Mexico.

Phoebe: I just sit here scratching my itchy feet!

livelikeyouretraveling_manymanyadventures

{ LLYT: Tell us how the idea for Many Many Adventures was born? What do you hope to accomplish with it? }

Ronnie: It happened organically. We had always talked about writing about our travels, if for no other reason than to keep them for ourselves, or share with friends and family. But we didn’t know what to do with them. I toyed around briefly with the idea of submitting pieces to travel websites, but then just thought, “why don’t we just have our own site?” At first, we didn’t really do much with it. It wasn’t until this year that we began to spend a lot more time on it, both writing more and beginning to post work from other travelers. And all the positive response we’ve gotten back has contributed to us wanting to keep making it better and inspire more people to travel and share their stories.

{ LLYT: Any additional thoughts? }

Ronnie: Just that it’s so important to be honest about what it is that you want, both in a relationship and with life. It’s easy to get caught up with something that isn't perfect and stop looking for the things and people that will truly make you happy.

Phoebe: Every relationship is hard work. – you have to negotiate all the stuff that comes flying at you out of nowhere – to say nothing of traversing continents and oceans. You need to be with someone who makes you happy, makes you laugh, and loves you. If you have found that person, then all the other stuff is negotiable, and it's worth finding a way to make it work.

Traveling together is a good way to see if you can handle living a "life" together. It's a clever mini test for a couple. Ronnie gives some good advice how to stay zen while traveling. How to go from being being at a stalemate and completely annoyed with each other to being happy and back on the "road". Most of the time it's a very simple thing that you have to do. Take a look at how our love birds handled the situation while in New Zealand.

Zen And The Art of Traveling

IDEA152: Mix Culture & Romance–A Recipe for First Timers in Rome

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT, EXPLORE

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

To celebrate my birthday Vito and I booked a trip to the one and only, eternal city of Rome. I have been to Rome a few times having studied in Italy, but it was going to be Vito's first time there. Quite a responsibility to introduce this magical city to someone and still have plenty of time to simply luxuriate in piazzas and people watch which is MY favorite thing to do. Oh and I must mention that we would only have two full days there as this was to be our maiden voyage outside of the country sans kids.

Clearly a strategic master plan would be needed in this race against the clock to discover all "must see" mysteries of Rome and still experience the dolce far niente (it's sweet to do nothing) lifestyle. Good thing I'm an expert in planned romance!

• • •

1st Ingredient - A plush place to stay

The first ingredient in the recipe for a romantic getaway in Rome is plush accommodations. Sure you don't plan on staying inside much when you only have 2 days to see all of Rome but nothing will help to set a romantic tone better then waking up in a swanky private apartment with a sexy view of the city.

My go-to secret address is: Romeloft.com

Onthesamepage_blog_romeloft

2nd Ingredient - A quintessential Roman breakfast

There is no need to scour books and blogs to find out the best place to have breakfast in Rome because breakfast magic happens right in your "local" bar just down the stairs from wherever it is you're staying. Do breakfast like the locals meaning a cappuccino or a latte macchiato with a croissant (go ahead and make it a chocolate one!) while standing up at the bar counter. You must first confidently stroll straight to the register and pay receiving a little ticket which you then give to the bar tender along with your order. You stand at the marble counter with everyone else as you eat your breakfast. (Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to sit later when its aperitif time. And just fyi, it costs extra to sit down at a table.)

3rd Ingredient - A strategic plan of action

We had just two full days to give Vito a complete Rome 101 overview as well as satisfy my desire for the relaxed dolce vita experience so knowing when and where to go was of the essence. My tool of choice - Jauntful.  It's incredibly easy to use, you just click and add the sites, and they are magically placed on the map. You can then email yourself a nice printable PDF.

For day one we packed in all the historical sites in the morning starting at the Colosseum and working our way north. Slower activities are planned for after lunch such as the Spanish Steps and walk along a shopping street Via Corso. Absolutely build in time to relax before dinner, it breaks up the day nicely and serves to make sure you're fresh to enjoy a late dinner (8.30pm is the normal dinnertime) and some few glasses of wine...

For day two our first stop was the Vatican. (NOTE: Wednesdays and of course Sundays are days to have audience with the Pope, unless you specifically want to hear the service I suggest going on other days of the week when its a lot less crowded.) After that we headed to Trastevere for the rest of the day.

4th Ingredient: The WOW moment.

Every trip has to have one. The waw moment is that magical moment when you stand back and really acknowledge what an amazing time you're having. Sure you can't exactly plan for it, but you can certainly create a favorable atmosphere. The easiest way to put yourself in the mood to be amazed are view points, or "inspiration points" if you will. In Rome there are obviously plenty of those but the one I recommend is where you are on the other side of the Tiber river and can view Rome in all it's 360 degree glory. And this place is: Gianicolo or Janiculum Hill. Take a taxi up the hill to the gorgeous Aqua Paola Fountain and then walk up the rest of the way to the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi on the very top. Ponder your life in general and how fantastic it is to be in Rome in particular...

DSC_0117.JPG

5th Ingredient - Get lost artfully.

Now, there is lots of advice out there abdout getting lost in a new city and surprising yourself with what you discover. That's all nice for someone with unlimited amount of time. But like I said, Vito and I had 48 hours only, so getting lost had to be done in a productive, structured way. So! On the second day after a busy morning at the Vatican museums it was time for a few hours of relaxation. One neighborhood I really wanted to explore was Trastevere and after our WAW moment at the Gianicolo, armed with just a general direction of where we needed to head we made our way down the hill and down the stone staircase into the depth of narrow cobblestone streets. The only destination in mind being a picturesque place for an afternoon espresso... We discovered adorable boutiques, pretty hidden churches, tiny piazzas with fountains, every turn tempting us as we happily gave in.

Here is my "expert" summary of how to get lost artfully:

1 - Pick a location with many different things to see in a defined area.

2 -Know the outer boundaries of the area that will signal that you've wandered too far.

3 - Have an experience in mind and a plan "B" ready in case getting lost is not happening as artfully as you envisioned.

I had a map and an X on it for a place to have our picturesque espresso. What do you know, wandering about eventually brought us to that very piazza though we realized it only after we got up from our magic espressos walking a few steps further to walk right by the cafe "X" on my map.

IDEA148: Travel Like a Local & Swap Homes with a Global Neighbor

by Alla Feldman in EXPLORE, CONNECT

Knok - 1 of 5 Featured House Swapping Sites that help you travel like a local.

Knok - 1 of 5 Featured House Swapping Sites that help you travel like a local.

Knok - 1 of 5 Featured House Swapping Sites that help you travel like a local.

We recently wrote about vacation rental Kid & Coe homes with "fully stocked" kids rooms, and how it's really important to feel relaxed as a family when you travel. We now would like to introduce house swapping! A truly "my casa is your casa" way of travel.

When our second son was born, it sort of struck us that in a few years when both kids are over 2 years old we will be paying for FOUR people every time we fly! Hmm... we pondered that for a minute or 60. Right, so there goes 3K out the window before we even REACH our destination. Then there is accommodation for 2+2, food and entertainment. Let's just say, I'm doing breathing exercises right now to ward off a panic attack. Enter: house swapping. You exchange homes (and possibly cars) for your vacation with someone else. Much more economical, not to mention being able to stay in a fully stocked functional home.

Having someone you don't know stay in your house is a scary concept at first, but think about it, the other person is probably just as nervous as you are to leave all THEIR stuff. In a way, it is comforting that mutual trust is required. Imagine switching houses with friends? Or how about good friends of your friends? Less scary right? Well, the companies we found make house swapping a bit more warm and familiar for us with their concierge services. They all have a yearly membership fee, and with some for an additional fee they can actually help to match you with another swapper.

 • • •

1 - HomeExchange.com $135/year (95.40 Euro)
This company was featured in the movie "The Holiday" and has been around since 1992. They have a huge variety of destinations and homes. A customer service rep comes on to chat with you as soon as you get on the site so it makes it friendly and easy to get started.

onthesamepage_blog_homeexchange.png

 • • •

2 - Intervac.com
These guys have been around since 1953! Year membership costs $110 (79Euro) and includes personal assistance from a local representative. Intervac has representatives in many countries that I imagine you can bug with all kinds of questions and hand-holding requests. They also have options for discounted rentals if someone is making their second home available.

onthesamepage_blog_intervac

 • • •

3 - lovehomeswap.com
The cost of membership is $200/year (144 Euro), and premium concierge service will run you about $360/year (264 Euro). It includes many extras like: consultation and matching, personal key exchange, flight and restaurant bookings, airport lounge entrance, and city guides. Yes, it's expensive but I personally believe that this price will encourage only those very serious about doing an exchange to participate.

onthesamepage_blog_lovehomeswap

 • • •

4 - knok.com (top image)
Knok is a new house swapping site focusing on families. It has a feel of being in a club. With a price tag of around 500 Euro/year for a "Weekend tripper" option and a 1,300 Euro/year for a "Vacation tripper" option, it's indeed an expensive club. What's different about this is when you sign up and pay your fee you can immediately book either a 4 day weekend or an 8 day vacation. You "unlock" more days if you make your home available for stays when you're not there, thus making house swapping a bit more flexible since you don't necessary have to wait to match up with a family that wants to go on holiday exactly when you do. Also an upfront fee like these will probably ensure you're dealing with other families that are very serious about this form or travel. Another interesting feature is a user sourced guide of kid friendly places and things to do, and it is free.

 • • •

5 - behomm.com
Behomm is a special exchange place for creative people. These are homes where people, how shall I delicately put this, with heightened design sensibilities, like art directors, photographers, artists, designers, architects would feel right at home. I know this is exactly the kind of home exchange our very own, creative director, Mu-Hsien would enjoy! Her home is indeed Architecture Digest worthy.

onthesamepage_blog_behomm

This isn't for everyone, you have to be a person who really feels comfortable trusting your own instinct and ability to assess another person without having met them. I've hired people over skype and they've turned out to be great choices so I do feel like I could be comfortable in this situation. I think if you can organize this experience to make yourself feel confident, imagine the benefits! You get to live in a REAL, actual house of someone in the country you're visiting! In a real neighborhood where other "normal" people live. This is the ultimate, "live like a local experience." I imagine it's also a chance to potentially make interesting new friends.

I'm inspired! Hey, perhaps the next generation of this travel experience is to swap not only your house and car but your friends too! Come stay at my home and my friends will take you out!

{ To get more of a feel for what house swapping entails take a look at Magan's of Mapping Magan, interview with someone who has been house swapping for 6 years now. }

IDEA 142: Contemplate Life in Patagonia, Argentina

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT, EXPLORE, NATURE

On the banks of Lago Argentino. (February 2008)

On the banks of Lago Argentino. (February 2008)

alla_stampbig2.jpg

Love, marriage... then perhaps kids?

When did you realize for the first time that you wanted kids?
Was it a specific moment or a slower kind of realization?

Here is how the brilliant idea struck me.

It took a trip to the end of the world* for me to have the moment. I remember it exactly, especially because it crept up on me so unexpectedly. It happened on a platform overlooking the dramatic Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia, Argentina.  Never have I been the kind of person who visualized being a mom and holding chubby babies in my arms. In fact I was always squeamish if friends offered for me to hold their baby.  Like, “NO! You do realize I can drop that thing right!??” I can only shake my head now.

Then I met Vito and Vito said he wanted kids. The more we talked about it the more I tried to get used to the idea. I played a game called, “Would this be possible with a kid?” I asked this question whenever I was having fun. Reluctantly I had to admit that many of the times the answer would be yes. Still I wondered, is it right for me to have kids when I've never experienced that "warm and fuzzy" feeling of wanting to be a mom? What if that feeling never came? And worse, what if the feeling came when it was too late to even have kids!?

onthesamepage_blog_peritomoreno_glacier

So there we were, enjoying the magnificent scenery of the glacier. We stayed by the rail captivated for close to an hour. If you've ever seen a glacier then you know how hypnotic it is to just watch how every few minutes a little chunk (the size of a 5 story building) cracks off and slides into the water below almost as in slow motion. Mesmerized we stood thinking about how lucky we were to be on this amazing adventure seeing and experiencing things we never have before. I felt completely fulfilled and happy. I had my man with me, and we had Perito Moreno before us. Just then, a family: mom, dad, and four little boys arrived on the platform. There was immediate commotion as the rambunctious boys were more interested in chasing and pushing each other (dangerously close to the railing) than admiring the glacier. Finally the parents, ending up each with two boys practically hanging off of them like monkeys, stood leaning into each other to admire the scenery. And that’s when it hit me. “The feeling.” Except it was not warm and fuzzy. It was sharp, urgent and uncomfortable. It was jealousy. That couple had Perito Moreno AND four boys. We only had Perito Moreno and no boys! Zero! Not even one boy! What's more, they even had the audacity to look like they were enjoying the glacier experience and bonding as a family at the same time. The nerve on them!

I watched the four boys with a brand new captivation, Perito Moreno now relegated to simply being the backdrop, as I realized that perhaps the next “BIG” adventure Vito and I are always looking for could indeed be...parenthood.

onthesamepage_blog_patagonia_argentina.jpeg

We'll be back with "Part 2" to show you four unique places to stay in Patagonia that are very "conducive" to this whole life contemplating business...

IDEA141 : Make a Symbol of Love, Uniquely Yours

by Mu-Hsien Hsieh Lee in FLOW, CONNECT

{ Above: Nora & T. - Switzerland }

My ring represents our meaning of love, that much like the moon, it can be shiny and sparkly...and yet is sometimes a rough trail. T. designed the model out of wax and the goldsmith did the finishing in gold.

muhsien_livelikeyouretraveling_SMALL.jpg

Symbols of love come in all shapes and sizes. Most important are the people, cultures and beliefs that are brought into union. Today, we glimpse the wedding rings across several of our global neighbors! In each case, you'll find that the materials, process, design and meaning are all so varied. Probing deeper...they let us in to answer, what makes it uniquely yours?!

• • •
Courtney & M. - Mexico

(Lovely neighbor Courtney, over at Chiapas Bazaar) wanted something simple, beautiful, and most importantly, meaningful and symbolic. We decided on using one of the few organic gemstones in existence, a 25 million year old tree resin that is found in a few places in the world, one of which happens to be the state where my husband was born and raised. We chose a piece of faceted amber and had it mounted as a solitaire in white gold by a local artisan. We love the way it turned out, its uniqueness, that it comes from organic materials and was locally made in Chiapas. The artisan who made the ring kept repeating,'it is a true jewel, no one else will have something like this.'

How beautiful to weave in your husband's home town and local artistry...and there's something about amber that embodies the mystery of the earth's history!

• • •
Karen & J. - Chicago

My father-in-law's grandfather had this ring made for his future wife sometime around 1919 or 1920 in Germany before they left to come to the United States. When my husband had it appraised, the jeweler said everything about this ring is hand-crafted from the cuts on the stone itself to the delicate filigree work in the setting and down the side. It was saved for the wife of my husband (the only boy of four). The diamond has a flaw in it, but it's part of his family history and I wouldn't want any other ring.

Ohhh...Karen, all the way from Germany...this ring was destined for you all along!

onthesamepage_blog_alternative_engagement_ring23.JPG

• • •
Audrey & S. - Chicago

The engagement began with the mountain rings. Each member of S’s immediate family has one of these rings—handmade by an artisan in Alaska and modeled after the mountain range along the Kachemak Bay. The view has always struck a chord with S’s parents, and became representative of their wild Alaskan natures.

S. has always been my stars, and I’ve been his moon. We’ve never yearned for diamonds or glamour, so we wanted to find something simply representative of our past, present, and future. With a Portland-based jeweler, we designed the sapphire wedding rings to represent the moon circling the sky over the mountains, in a perfect union.

How beautifully symbolic and the pieces truly *fit* together, just like the two of you!

LLYT Challenge : {Love} Like You're Traveling!

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT

onthesamepage_blog_rose_in_the_rain
onthesamepage_blog_rose_in_the_rain
alla_stampbig2.jpg

This "Live Like You're Traveling" joins "Floral Fridays" with a beautiful theme of "Something Romantic". More info on "Floral Fridays" below.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who lived in a Concrete Jungle. One fine day she met a dashing prince from a kingdom far away and over the ocean. They fell in love! Every 6 weeks they would fly all over the world to meet each other at a new exotic location... They fell more and more in love! Then, exactly a year from the day they met, the dashing prince whisked the princess from her Concrete Jungle to his kingdom far away and over the ocean... where they're living their happily ever after...

Hmmm... fairy tale? Yes! MY fairy tale! (ps. Eat your heart out Hollywood!)

Am I lucky? For sure!!! BUT that's not my point. My point is that actually falling in love is a simple science and if we can crack it, staying in love will also become as easy as eating cake for breakfast! WHAT!? Yes, yes, that's right, SCIENCE! Just stay with me...

Take Vito and I for example. We fell in love under very High Emotion* circumstances, let's add them up:

1 - We had obstacles to overcome together (living on 2 different continents, being from 2 different cultures, different languages, etc.)

2 - We had a limited amount of time (we saw each other about every 6 weeks for a long weekend, thus we knew at some point in time we would have to make some decisions.)

3 - When we did see each other, we usually traveled to a place that was new for both of us (that's already exciting all on its own).

Here we are circa 2006 reunited in Schiphol airport, such young punks :)

Have you ever wondered why co-stars in movies fall in love so often? Because they're thrown together in "High Emotion" circumstances. They usually have to overcome some kind of obstacles together, like long shooting schedules, tyrant directors, and so on. They know that the filming of the movie is only for a limited time, and we tend to stress when we think something nice might be taken away from us. Finally, the filming of a movie is usually in some location that's not their home.

This is also the reason, people that work together fall in love, pairs figure skaters usually get married (Olympics on my mind!), and lovers that meet while traveling always stay sharp in each other's minds.

So what can we learn from all this?

{ Love } like you're traveling!

If we can figure out how to create similarly High Emotion* circumstances in our daily lives, just like the ones that come up naturally when we travel, then we'll be able to stay in love forever. Theoretically speaking... :)

One of our missions of living like you're traveling is to see beauty with a pair of 'fresh eyes', this doesn't just apply to your surroundings, your city, it also applies to the people you love. So how do we create these *High Emotion* situations in our everyday lives?

Glad you asked, because this brings us to our...

• • • THE LLYT CHALLENGE • • •

Let's do one specific thing for each one of these!

1- Surprise each other
Thinking up new "projects" to do together will give you opportunities to surprise each other. Like... putting together IKEA furniture (...then again let's scratch that), or signing up to learn scuba-diving, or having a baby together (ha!). Or simpler and less expensive then babies, how about just surprising your loved one with something that seems "off schedule" that you'll know will bring a smile to their face?

2- Learn something new about each other
Again, if we do the same thing every day as a couple, there is very little chance for you to learn something new about your partner. Let's break the routine. Get off the couch. Go to a shooting range and maybe your partner can learn about your aggressive Rambo qualities! Go cart racing? Camping? Simply doing something different together will render plenty of opportunities to learn something new about each other... and even for you to learn something new about yourself too. *Also, don't forget to ask probing questions about each other!...try to find out something you didn't know before about your partner!

3- Celebrate each other
And this is an EASY one! But one I'm sure we all easily forget. Give presents to each other for no reason. A little box of chocolates? Champagne with strawberries on a regular Wednesday night? A fancy night out for no reason! Or simply, give each other a compliment everyday for a week...!

And since this is a romantic Floral Friday, I'm remembering the TWO DOZEN long stemmed red roses that arrived at my house one Valentine's day when Vito and I were doing our inter-continental dating... Maybe I'll ask Vito to "surprise" me with something equally ridiculous (and FABULOUS!) this Valentine's day! The rose in the photo above is also a present from Vito on my birthday, but this time a more practical and long lasting version planted in our patio outdoor pots.

Floral Fridays is a monthly photography project with different themes each month. This series is about fun and taking time out to smell the flowers. To play along, please email Trishie (trishie@underlockandkeyblog. com) for next month's theme

There is some kind of magic that envelops January... It's the start of the new year and it's impossible not to feel just a little bit like this year ANYTHING is truly possible. So many interesting and exciting adventures await! Ahhhh....

Ok, did you finish giving yourself a hug and twirling around the room with eyes closed? Guess what, those interesting and exciting adventures will not just fall in your lap (well they might if you're lucky) but are you willing to leave it up to chance to have "the best year of your life?" Why not actively pursue those exciting and interesting adventures instead of just waiting for them to happen? That's right, inspiration drill sargent Alla is here! Now drop down and give me 20...and on your knuckles!

That's the magic of travel, it puts us right in the path of adventures. Whether it's because we have our eyes open for them or simply because we're immersed in a new atmosphere of another culture, we find excitement all around. But this magic does not have to END when we touch town at our home airport. Let's review the first concept of our mission shall we?

• • •

Foster a curiosity for the world and celebrate our differences.

Well that's why we travel right? We want to soak up a new language, discover amazing food you won't get elsewhere or shop in the quaint streets of a charming town... even to see what it feels like to live like a local. The life-long student in us, feels alive with the stimulation of new experiences and learnings. We borrow from other cultures and traditions to enrich our own personalized approach.

So what are we going to do about all this?
How about just 3 SIMPLE THINGS?!!!

1 - Choose ONE holiday celebration from another culture to celebrate this year.
Is there one you've always been curious about? Maybe you've seen your neighbors celebrate and it looked like a good time? Maybe your city or a cultural house organizes a celebration. Challenge yourself this year to join in on the party!

2 - Choose a cuisine that you've never cooked before... and learn to cook ONE dish!
Perhaps a friend can teach you? Or how about a cooking workshop? Why not get in touch with a food blogger and ask them for advice.

and the 3rd... EASY!

3 - Follow a global neighbor on Instagram from a country/culture that you're curious about.
Choose someone who likes to share views of their country and everyday lives (and their eats!). Ask them questions if you see something you're not familiar with!

You might be thinking, ok maybe I will take your challenge...
but are YOU guys going to do this too?

Of course!

I'm very infatuated with Asia in general lately and Chinese New Year celebration in particular. My curiosity was peeked through friends that have taken me by the hand and introduced me to this holiday over the years. Amazingly enough a French friend took me to China town in NYC for Chinese New Year to hear the drums and see the dancing dragon collecting money from shop owners. A Panamanian friend introduced me to one of her Chinese New Year traditions of going out for a dim-sum brunch. Both these friends are not Chinese, they just fell in love with the holiday and decided to make it part of their traditions!

So I in turn would like to introduce my little family to the fun of Chinese New Year and create a CNY tradition in our house! To help me, our very own Mu-Hsien will share a glimpse of a special way to celebrate from her home town and a global neighbor Amy, who writes a delightful cooking blog, will guide me with getting started with Chinese cooking! I'm beyond excited! Of course we are sharing it all with you in case Chinese New Year is on your list of holidays to 'try on'.

Love Without Borders : Courting in Chiapas, Mexico

Here at LLYT, we love a good love story, especially one that brings people together... beyond borders. We last visited (Wild Sicily) through global neighbor Jillian, of A Feathery Nest and today we bring you a taste of rural Mexico through Courtney, of Chiapas Bazaar. (Photos via Courtney)

Sure you can fall in love with a person or with a place, but to fall in love with someone who also lives in a faraway place? Sounds like something out of a fairy tale, right? But in today's world of high speed trains, planes, wifi and pretty much high speed everything, why should borders cultural or geographical still deter us from following our dreams? So starts a new series "Love Without Borders" in which we will take a peek at the lives of our Global Neighbors to see what happens when we transcend these barriers. Thank you Courtney for sharing your story!

• • •

Chiapas and I have a curiously long history together. While I’ve only lived here full-time for a year and a half, Chiapas and I first heard of each other back in the year 2000. Chiapas was here, where it always is, and I was studying Spanish in a city called Cuernavaca, a beautiful town about an hour outside of Mexico City.  At that point, I hadn't yet visited Chiapas - that happened for the first time in 2004.  But sight unseen, it had always intrigued me - jungles, Zapatistas, Mayan ruins...

After finishing university, I moved to New York City and scrambled up the corporate ladder at LVMH, finally ending up at Marc Jacobs International. Life was cozy and delicious, but something was missing. I also had this dream of joining the Peace Corps, of serving a greater good - paying it forward. So I undertook the laborious process of applying to go volunteer in the developing world. I was finally assigned my country - with all my Spanish lessons and my extensive Latin America travels - and I went to Moldova (itty bitty country in Eastern Europe, in case you haven´t heard of it…).

I had about three months to tie up loose ends with my US life, friends, and family. I decided to take one month and spend it in Chiapas, Mexico where I could eat tacos and mole to my heart’s content.  It was a solo trip - almost like a NYC decompression chamber. But I was also fortunate because I had some friends in Chiapas that I knew from my study abroad days.

During this time in Chiapas, it was through a friend of mine that I had met during my time in Cuernavaca that introduced me and my future husband. The following events are important because they just affirm how the universe had been conspiring to get us (me, M. and Chiapas) together. While living in Moldova with M. still in Mexico, I fell and broke my ankle and was eventually discharged from the Peace Corps. Once I healed, I moved here to Chiapas to be with M. and I haven’t looked back. I had always wanted to live in Mexico, so there wasn't much of a discussion between M and I about where we would start our new life together.

So now you see - I have a background in world of fashion and I have a passion for service.  How did these two interests manifest themselves in my adopted home of Chiapas?  In this { www.chiapasbazaar.com }

We started Chiapas Bazaar in early 2013 with the goal to provide a steady income to rural artisans in the state of Chiapas by exposing their products to international markets where there is a great demand for beautiful, handmade treasures. We are also keenly aware of the demand for factory-free pieces and are extremely proud to say that artisans work from home where they can still do their daily duties and create their pieces in their downtime.  It’s a “win-win” for everyone. The artisans can continue their trade but reach new markets and have steady work; customers around the world can own a piece handmade by a Chiapas artisan; and we create the connection between these two that wouldn’t otherwise exist.

Our job takes us to many beautiful rural places in Chiapas - the greenest place you might imagine, full of lush tropical vegetation or pine forests where the vast majority of the population works in agriculture in the countryside. We travel and visit the off-the-beaten path villages where Spanish is often the second language of the residents. It´s almost like the backdrop is the same, just the traditional dress of the people changes. In these villages with semi-paved roads, you’ll find the most beautiful colors and color combinations, traditions passed down generations, and true artists.

chiapas3.jpg
chiapas1.jpg

We feel extremely honored to work with the artisans and we feel that we have a huge responsibility to educate customers and anyone who visits our site about the work the artisans dedicate themselves to and the time, effort and skill it requires to produce such beautiful things.

So wait... if you bravely defy any obstacles and just 'go for it' the universe actually HELPS you along? IDEA50 : Adopt a Party! Put on Your Dirndl & Lederhosen for Oktoberfest

by Alla Feldman in SAVOR, CONNECT

Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. (All photos via Lars.)

Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. (All photos via Lars.)

Onthesamepage_blog_alla5.jpg

Let me start out by reading you a small excerpt from the baby diary:

Dear baby Vin,
When you were born mommy and daddy were so excited! So much so that your daddy decided to celebrate the occasion by drinking beer 3 days in a row. In another country.

To save face, we told your big brother Mo that daddy was on vacation "doing sports and swimming". Of course we did not elaborate that doing sports meant lifting liters of beer and swimming was really referring to the ocean of beer being consumed.

Do I sound a bit annoyed*? Well only because I haven't had a beer in what seems like ages and will not be partaking the rest of the year due to the milk production facilities that currently house themselves on the premises of my person. ***If you're concerned, mom-in-law spent the entire weekend with me and the kids so we were very well taken care of.

• • •

Back to the beers...
If you were ever curious what it's like to be at the famous Oktoberfest in the lovely Munich, Germany we've got just the reportage for you. First, a history bit.

Once upon a time, on October 12, 1810 to be exact, Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (I can't pronounce it either). To celebrate the happy occasion the Prince threw a mega party and invited his closest friends, or rather all citizens of Munich to come along, drink and be merry! There were horse races, pig roasts, folk entertainment and lots and lots of beer. Ever since then it has been a yearly celebration. In Germany Oktoberfest is actually called Theresienwiese, meaning Theresa's meadow, because the original party was held on the fields in front of the city gates. Locals to this day call it "Wies'n" for short.

entranceoctoberfest.jpg
grounds.jpg

• • •

So now that we've got the basics down, let's get to the tough decisions...

My oh my, what to wear!? The theme is peasant "chic" as you can imagine. Imitating how Alpine peasants used to dress. For gentlemen, Lederhosen (Leather overalls) with checkered shirt in red or blue. Fedora with a happy feather and very sexy white socks to the knees.

Looking sharp boys! Looking sharp! (My Vito is the ginger one in the middle.)

otsp_oktoberfestoutfits

• • •

For the ladies, the go to outfit is a dirndl dress. A circular cut dress with a boustier type top. There is usually a white blouse that leaves your ample bosoms on display, you know to show off the plenitude of Bavaria. A cute little apron and you probably want to braid your hair a la Heidi for the full effect.

Nicely done ladies!

otsp_oktoberfestladies.jpg

• • •

Now on to my favorite part! Drinking and eating!

This is the whole point of this shindig after all. The beer for Oktoberfest are produced by the following brewers who call themselves "Club of Munich Brewers": Augustiner-Bräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner-Bräu, Spatenbräu, and Staatliches Hofbräu-München. Now days the beer is golden, but originally it was a strong dark brew called "Marzen" named after the month of March which is when it was brewed and then left to ferment slowly over the summer months.

*Please note the time of 9.15 AM. Breakfast of champions - redefined.

IMG_0220.JPG
IMG_0224.JPG
IMG_0225.JPG

Now obviously if you start your day with a liter of beer at some point you'll need to eat. So what's on the menu? How about a very manly pork roast? Or as the locals would say Schweinebraten!

otsp_porkroast.jpg

After you've devoured that beast, you can nibble on a whole roasted chicken... called Hendl.

otsp_hendl.jpg

But a real manly man will STILL be hungry, so it's only fitting to grab a Würstl sandwich!

otsp_wurstl.jpg

Or a Weisswurst  with cabbage...

otsp_oktoberfestfood.JPG

Belly finally full, it's time to be entertained with some music, and order another round.

otsp_oktoberfestmusic.jpg

And then... things will get fuzzy, very fuzzy... and perhaps a grand leaning tower of
beer will be constructed?... I think putting beers on your head makes you smarter.

otsp_beertower.JPG

Well I hope you've enjoyed this little manly visit to Oktoberfest in Munich. Are you inspired to come and be part of this crazy volksfest next year? Fret not if you won't be able to catch a plane to Bavaria, your very own city might be hosting a version of Oktoberfest so check it out!

Oktoberfest near you:
Amsterdam   /   New York City   /   Chicago   /   Beijing  /   Hong Kong

Ahh, no beer for me this October, but don't you worry, I shall console myself when I go on a shopping trip to Paris with the girls. I'll be taking Vito's credit card with me. ;)

IDEA126: Travel Like a Local and Stay in a Family Friendly Kid & Coe Home

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT, EXPLORE

Kid&Coe Child Friendly Apartments & Homes

Kid&Coe Child Friendly Apartments & Homes

Kid&Coe Child Friendly Apartments & Homes

Kid&Coe Child Friendly Apartments & Homes

Onthesamepage_blog_alla5.jpg

Sometimes you come across a company and you just want to scream "YES!!! This is exactly what I've been dreaming about!". Well here is a fabulous new find for traveling with kids. (Thanks BozAround for the introduction!) Kid & Coe are taking "apartment" stay to the next level specializing in places with children's rooms equipped with toys and other child friendly extras. I don't know about you but when we travel we bring a suitcase for ourselves, a suitcase for the child (we have yet to travel with our new baby Vin, but he is only 3 weeks old) AND a suitcase with toys, not to mention a stroller. Staying at Kid & Coe place will surely help to eliminate the toy suitcase at least.

Improving travel logistics is only one of the benefits, what we really love about this idea is how you can experience a destination while living like a local family! You know we here at OTSP are all about immersion travel. Eating like locals, or rather with locals, and now you can live like a local too. I for one can't wait to try this out. I told Vito last year that I thought it would be fun to celebrate Christmas in Iceland with the whole family. He thought it was a rather strange idea considering Iceland is a cold and dark place in the middle of winter. I however envision cozy strolls along the shopping street during the Christmas presents rush and having hot chocolates at the adorable cafes. Of course going for a family dip in the pools. Going on sled rides... the list goes on as I think there is plenty of family fun to be had in the wintry Iceland. By the way, each Kid&Coe apartment comes with a guide of kid friendly activities from a local scout. Perfection!

[ The Hrisateigur Residence, Iceland ]

At the end of a fun filled day you want to come "home" and have a refrigerator available for the inevitable snacks and milk bottles, you want comfortable room to "stow" your kids away for a night of sweet dreams and TRUST me you want a comfortable living room with a TV and somewhere to perch your over-sized glass of red wine for an evening of relaxation. Vito and I call it the "happy moment", when we sit down on the couch alone after tucking in our oldest into bed promptly at 8pm. Yes it's a bit different traveling with a toddler because unlike a baby who will happily snooze through thumping samba music in his stroller while his parents sip caipirinas at a swanky South Beach, Miami lounge, a toddler needs a real bed and preferably a night light with star shapes. (Prince!) Thus unless you want to be sitting in the dark starting at 8pm you need a place with a living room.

Kid&Coe's accommodations look so adorable that I can just imagine having a sweet little Christmas dinner at the "borrowed home" and pretending we're an Icelandic family! Would you just check out this residence of 5 bedrooms! Three adorable children's rooms fully stocked with toys, shelves of books and plastic dinosaurs!!! Also check out the huge bathtub! I can definitely see a "happy moment" happening in one of those!

There is only one issue remains to be settled... WHEN ARE WE GOING!?
