Live Like You're Traveling

Ideas to Turn your Everyday into An Exotic Adventure

Love Without Borders : Phoebe & Ronnie, Create "Many Many Adventures"

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT

Ronnie and Phoebe of Many Many Adventures.
Ronnie and Phoebe of Many Many Adventures.

Traveling has a way of testing your limits, at which point you must decide to either retreat or to grow and go where you've 'never gone before' figuratively and literally. It's being presented with constant change that you have to adapt to. We believe travel is so addictive precisely because of this quality. Now imagine falling in love while traveling? You're building a relationship with another person WHILE both of you are transcending personal boundaries. Sounds like a recipe for an international scale disaster... But, what if you've traveled together and instead of growing apart, grew closer together?

• • •

Today's love story is told by two adventurers Phoebe and Ronnie. Phoebe is from Australia and Ronnie is from the US. They met while traveling and together traversed many a continent. To share their stories and those of other travel lovers they've created Many Many Adventures, a beautiful site for travelers by travelers. There we can get inspired by recounts of incredible journeys not only to the ends of the world, but most importantly to the fringes of ourselves. Today, they share with us how they met, what it's like being in a multi-cultural relationship and how to stay zen in love and in life.

livelikeyouretraveling_phoebe_ronnie_manymanyadventures.jpg

{ LLYT: You two met while traveling. Honestly now, what were your very first impressions of each other? Why do you think you clicked? }

Ronnie: The first time we met we were both backpacking through Central America and ended up spending about 3 weeks together. I immediately had a crush on Phoebe, but she had a boyfriend at the time so nothing happened. And honestly, that was perfect. We were able to become such good friends that it opened up the possibility of us seeing each other in the future, when something could happen.

Phoebe: I was travelling in Central America with my little brother – it was our first time backpacking, and we were a little green to say the least. Since my brother was only 18, he was pretty overwhelmed by the combination of foreign languages, pretty girls and readily available alcohol. When Ronnie saw him standing in the supermarket holding a six pack of vodka-lemonade, he decided to become his mentor. So really, I just tagged along with them, as Ronnie showed Ben the ins and outs of being a man. I honestly thought he was a bit of a player, but he made me laugh.

When we were in Greece together, two years later, Ronnie showed me the diary entry he wrote the day we met, and the part about having a crush on me, and I started to think perhaps this could be more than just a travel romance…
livelikeyouretraveling_ronnie_phoebe_manymanyadventures.jpg

{ LLYT: Ronnie tell us about how you decided to actually make the move to Australia? Did you always know that you were 'destined' to live away from home or did you surprise yourself? }

Ronnie: Ha. That’s a very long and complicated answer, but I’ll try. I enjoy living in new places and the experience of that, so moving somewhere like Australia wasn’t a surprise to me, or anyone who knew me, at that point in my life. The fact that I decided to move to Australia to live with Phoebe just a week after we were in Thailand together and had decided to end our relationship, well, that was a bit more unexpected.

Phoebe: Yeah, that was probably my fault. I took a little convincing that this thing could actually work!

{ LLYT: Now, the trickiest part of any relationship is communicating. Phoebe tell us, even though both of you are native English speakers, being from different continents do you find that you have to try "harder" to understand what the other says? }

Phoebe: There are definitely times when I have to remind myself that Ronnie grew up in a different culture. My family is from England, so even though I grew up in Australia, where people are generally very open, I have a bit of that British reticence and propriety in the way I say things – excuse me...thank you...would it be ok if...I think that maybe…you know what I mean. In my experience, Americans can be a lot blunter in their communications, so there have been moments when I've been pissed off at the way Ronnie says something when he is just being honest.

Other than that, anyone who has tried to have a long distance relationship will tell you how much text communications suck. Ronnie once commented on how cute my “nerdiness” was…which auto-corrected to “neediness”… which resulted in some serious radio silence on my part until we figured it out.

livelikeyouretraveling_ronnie_phoebe_manymanyadventures.jpg

{ LLYT: You guys travel a lot, is there any moment in particular that really stands out as "Wow, I can't believe we're actually here" moment? }

Phoebe: Ton Sai, Thailand, November, 2012. It was the end of eight months of travelling for me, and my last stop before home. We had just done four months of long distance, and we had come so close to calling it quits so many times, that it was surreal to be in the same time zone, let alone staying in the same bamboo hut. We had such a magical two weeks there, climbing, laying on the beach, eating amazing food. It was supposed to be our last hurrah, but it ended up convincing us (well, me) that we could actually make this work. Three days after we said goodbye in Thailand we made plans for Ronnie to move here.

Ronnie: I feel a rush of excitement and gratitude every time I get off an airplane, but mostly that’s because I’m afraid of heights and get pretty bad motion sickness.

{ LLYT: When you are not on the road, what do you like to do to keep your wanderlust satisfied? }

Ronnie: For me, living in a different country right now, it’s all a little bit like traveling. There’s always new places to explore or something new to experience. And because traveling is such a big part of our life, there’s always a trip right around the corner. We just got back from doing a van trip around New Zealand last month. Next month we’re moving to Chicago. And we’re going to spend Christmas this year in Mexico.

Phoebe: I just sit here scratching my itchy feet!

livelikeyouretraveling_manymanyadventures

{ LLYT: Tell us how the idea for Many Many Adventures was born? What do you hope to accomplish with it? }

Ronnie: It happened organically. We had always talked about writing about our travels, if for no other reason than to keep them for ourselves, or share with friends and family. But we didn’t know what to do with them. I toyed around briefly with the idea of submitting pieces to travel websites, but then just thought, “why don’t we just have our own site?” At first, we didn’t really do much with it. It wasn’t until this year that we began to spend a lot more time on it, both writing more and beginning to post work from other travelers. And all the positive response we’ve gotten back has contributed to us wanting to keep making it better and inspire more people to travel and share their stories.

{ LLYT: Any additional thoughts? }

Ronnie: Just that it’s so important to be honest about what it is that you want, both in a relationship and with life. It’s easy to get caught up with something that isn't perfect and stop looking for the things and people that will truly make you happy.

Phoebe: Every relationship is hard work. – you have to negotiate all the stuff that comes flying at you out of nowhere – to say nothing of traversing continents and oceans. You need to be with someone who makes you happy, makes you laugh, and loves you. If you have found that person, then all the other stuff is negotiable, and it's worth finding a way to make it work.

Traveling together is a good way to see if you can handle living a "life" together. It's a clever mini test for a couple. Ronnie gives some good advice how to stay zen while traveling. How to go from being being at a stalemate and completely annoyed with each other to being happy and back on the "road". Most of the time it's a very simple thing that you have to do. Take a look at how our love birds handled the situation while in New Zealand.

IDEA152: Mix Culture & Romance–A Recipe for First Timers in Rome

by Alla Feldman in CONNECT, EXPLORE

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

Santa Cicilia in Trastevere.

To celebrate my birthday Vito and I booked a trip to the one and only, eternal city of Rome. I have been to Rome a few times having studied in Italy, but it was going to be Vito's first time there. Quite a responsibility to introduce this magical city to someone and still have plenty of time to simply luxuriate in piazzas and people watch which is MY favorite thing to do. Oh and I must mention that we would only have two full days there as this was to be our maiden voyage outside of the country sans kids.

Clearly a strategic master plan would be needed in this race against the clock to discover all "must see" mysteries of Rome and still experience the dolce far niente (it's sweet to do nothing) lifestyle. Good thing I'm an expert in planned romance!

• • •

1st Ingredient - A plush place to stay

The first ingredient in the recipe for a romantic getaway in Rome is plush accommodations. Sure you don't plan on staying inside much when you only have 2 days to see all of Rome but nothing will help to set a romantic tone better then waking up in a swanky private apartment with a sexy view of the city.

My go-to secret address is: Romeloft.com

Onthesamepage_blog_romeloft

2nd Ingredient - A quintessential Roman breakfast

There is no need to scour books and blogs to find out the best place to have breakfast in Rome because breakfast magic happens right in your "local" bar just down the stairs from wherever it is you're staying. Do breakfast like the locals meaning a cappuccino or a latte macchiato with a croissant (go ahead and make it a chocolate one!) while standing up at the bar counter. You must first confidently stroll straight to the register and pay receiving a little ticket which you then give to the bar tender along with your order. You stand at the marble counter with everyone else as you eat your breakfast. (Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to sit later when its aperitif time. And just fyi, it costs extra to sit down at a table.)

3rd Ingredient - A strategic plan of action

We had just two full days to give Vito a complete Rome 101 overview as well as satisfy my desire for the relaxed dolce vita experience so knowing when and where to go was of the essence. My tool of choice - Jauntful.  It's incredibly easy to use, you just click and add the sites, and they are magically placed on the map. You can then email yourself a nice printable PDF.

For day one we packed in all the historical sites in the morning starting at the Colosseum and working our way north. Slower activities are planned for after lunch such as the Spanish Steps and walk along a shopping street Via Corso. Absolutely build in time to relax before dinner, it breaks up the day nicely and serves to make sure you're fresh to enjoy a late dinner (8.30pm is the normal dinnertime) and some few glasses of wine...

For day two our first stop was the Vatican. (NOTE: Wednesdays and of course Sundays are days to have audience with the Pope, unless you specifically want to hear the service I suggest going on other days of the week when its a lot less crowded.) After that we headed to Trastevere for the rest of the day.

4th Ingredient: The WOW moment.

Every trip has to have one. The waw moment is that magical moment when you stand back and really acknowledge what an amazing time you're having. Sure you can't exactly plan for it, but you can certainly create a favorable atmosphere. The easiest way to put yourself in the mood to be amazed are view points, or "inspiration points" if you will. In Rome there are obviously plenty of those but the one I recommend is where you are on the other side of the Tiber river and can view Rome in all it's 360 degree glory. And this place is: Gianicolo or Janiculum Hill. Take a taxi up the hill to the gorgeous Aqua Paola Fountain and then walk up the rest of the way to the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi on the very top. Ponder your life in general and how fantastic it is to be in Rome in particular...

DSC_0117.JPG

5th Ingredient - Get lost artfully.

Now, there is lots of advice out there abdout getting lost in a new city and surprising yourself with what you discover. That's all nice for someone with unlimited amount of time. But like I said, Vito and I had 48 hours only, so getting lost had to be done in a productive, structured way. So! On the second day after a busy morning at the Vatican museums it was time for a few hours of relaxation. One neighborhood I really wanted to explore was Trastevere and after our WAW moment at the Gianicolo, armed with just a general direction of where we needed to head we made our way down the hill and down the stone staircase into the depth of narrow cobblestone streets. The only destination in mind being a picturesque place for an afternoon espresso... We discovered adorable boutiques, pretty hidden churches, tiny piazzas with fountains, every turn tempting us as we happily gave in.

Here is my "expert" summary of how to get lost artfully:

1 - Pick a location with many different things to see in a defined area.

2 -Know the outer boundaries of the area that will signal that you've wandered too far.

3 - Have an experience in mind and a plan "B" ready in case getting lost is not happening as artfully as you envisioned.

I had a map and an X on it for a place to have our picturesque espresso. What do you know, wandering about eventually brought us to that very piazza though we realized it only after we got up from our magic espressos walking a few steps further to walk right by the cafe "X" on my map.

LLYT Challenge : Live La Dolce Vita

by Alla Feldman

The fabled Trevi fountain, Rome

The fabled Trevi fountain, Rome

The fabled Trevi fountain, Rome

The fabled Trevi fountain, Rome

I spent a few glorious days in Rome last week for my birthday! There were romantic walks along the Tiber river with the dusk setting. There was taking in of the sites punctuated by tiny magical espressos. Afternoons were spent leisurely sampling wines in piazzas overlooking century old works of art. It was a total disconnect from everyday life and a complete immersion in "La Dolce Vita." The few days Vito and I spent in Rome seemed like a full two weeks.

I got inspired to break down the whole concept of "La Dolce Vita." Clearly living la dolce vita is not only for the Romans, though of course the architecture, cozy piazzas to canoodle over a glass of wine, and the moonlight basking in the cool surfaces of smooth naked marble forms...do help to put you in the mood. So, what what can we learn from the Italian way of living life sweetly and how can we recreate it right where we are?

Mid-afternoon espresso and tiramisu in Trastevere, Rome

Mid-afternoon espresso and tiramisu in Trastevere, Rome

Firstly, the translation of "La Dolce Vita," from Italian is "The Sweet Life." It is a way of living that is opulent, full of pleasures... physical and otherwise, full of romance, indulgence and luxury. That's right! I said romance, indulgence, opulence, and luxury! It's OK, I promise. In real terms it means to take time to enjoy life for no other reason but to receive pleasure... oh-oh.

Shockingly vulgar...don't you love it!?

So how are we going to be a bit more like Marcello and Anita? By taking a few regular every day things and dolce-vitafying* them:

Dolce-vita-fy, verb
(according to the OTSP dictionary)
• • •
To up the glamour quotient, to make more sexy, to make something enjoyable for no reason other then to luxuriate in the moment. To take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Synonyms: glamorize, sexify, romanticize, elevate

onthesamepageblog_dolce_vita_challenge.jpg

Marocan decor.jpg

Regular: Drinking water
Dolce Vita! Drinking water out of a crystal wine glass with an ice cube and a lemon slice!

Regular: Sleeping
Dolce Vita! Sleeping on 500 thread count sheets wearing naughty little silk something!

Regular: Dinner (in the company of baby spitting peas and 3 yr old re-enacting fire rescue operation on the table)
Dolce Vita!-ish Dinner with a glass of wine, candle light and a bud vase bouquet on the table (+ baby & 3 yr. old)

Regular: Manicure
Dolce Vita! Manicure in bright red, magenta, orange, neon or any other color that makes you feel like the type of woman who kisses men in dark alleys and jumps into fountains!

Now that we've extensively defined what La Dolce Vita means we can introduce the challenge for April...

Create Your Dolce Vita Challenge

Reflecting lights in the Tiber river, Rome (More pics from my birthday getaway.)

Reflecting lights in the Tiber river, Rome (More pics from my birthday getaway.)

La Dolce Vita moments regardless of the myth, don't "just happen" and they are not only reserved for Rome and Romans. I in fact clearly saw said Romans in their cars yawning and looking not amused stuck in after work rush hour traffic along the Tibor river completely oblivious to the beautiful scenery. This just proves the point that these moments need to be CREATED and furthermore you have to put yourself in the MOOD for them.

Thus in order to successfully create dolce vita moments you need to have these 2 elements:

1. Ease of execution - so that when inspiration strikes you it's not a whole big production to set-up a certain atmosphere, situation or experience. Also if it's easy and accessible then you will want to have more and more of these moments!

2. Mood - yes if you yourself don't feel like the star of a sexy Italian movie then you won't really want dolce vita moments. And notice that you have to PUT yourself in the mood, not 'wait' to be in the mood.

The Approach

Plan ahead for spontaneity:
Think about what kind of dolce vita moments you'd like to enjoy, visualize them, think about where they're happening and the kind of mood you're in... Is it a prosecco lunch al fresco? A candle lit evening at home? A rowdy family brunch with freshly baked bread and adorable kids wearing cute outfits?

Figure out what "props" and "gear" you need to execute the setting. A picnic basket for an impromptu dinner fuori (outside)? Beautiful candles for a romantic dinner per due? Having a clean and organized house to lounge around in or spontaneously invite friends for a cocktail?

- Get your home ready room by room for dolce vita moments
- Take 'inventory' of what you have and what you need to the dolce vita moments you wnat

Always be in the mood:
What puts you in a good mood? What makes you 'ready' for an adventure? (And how you define "adventure" is absolutely non of my business...) Does it take a good hair day? Mani/pedi? Working out? Statement necklace? High heels? Latin music? Then make it happen - everyday. What gives you energy and inspiration? Do more of it - daily!

Aspetta! (wait), you say, you mean "spontaneous" and "effortless" dolce vita moments actually require PREPARATION!? Si si, correct! Feel free to call me a soul sucking killer of romance, but you'll be thanking me when you're lounging around in over-sized sunglasses on your sexy lawn furniture sipping Ferrarelle water from long stemmed champagne glass with a strawberry perched on the rim.

Now let's go prepare for La Dolce Vita!

Doesn't spring cleaning now seem like making love to Adonis in the afternoon on the black sands of a secluded Mediterranean volcanic island!? (Stromboli btw.)

LLYT Challenge : {Love} Like You're Traveling!

This "Live Like You're Traveling" joins "Floral Fridays" with a beautiful theme of "Something Romantic". More info on "Floral Fridays" below.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who lived in a Concrete Jungle. One fine day she met a dashing prince from a kingdom far away and over the ocean. They fell in love! Every 6 weeks they would fly all over the world to meet each other at a new exotic location... They fell more and more in love! Then, exactly a year from the day they met, the dashing prince whisked the princess from her Concrete Jungle to his kingdom far away and over the ocean... where they're living their happily ever after...

Hmmm... fairy tale? Yes! MY fairy tale! (ps. Eat your heart out Hollywood!)

Am I lucky? For sure!!! BUT that's not my point. My point is that actually falling in love is a simple science and if we can crack it, staying in love will also become as easy as eating cake for breakfast! WHAT!? Yes, yes, that's right, SCIENCE! Just stay with me...

Take Vito and I for example. We fell in love under very High Emotion* circumstances, let's add them up:

1 - We had obstacles to overcome together (living on 2 different continents, being from 2 different cultures, different languages, etc.)

2 - We had a limited amount of time (we saw each other about every 6 weeks for a long weekend, thus we knew at some point in time we would have to make some decisions.)

3 - When we did see each other, we usually traveled to a place that was new for both of us (that's already exciting all on its own).

Here we are circa 2006 reunited in Schiphol airport, such young punks :)

Here we are circa 2006 reunited in Schiphol airport, such young punks :)

• • •

Have you ever wondered why co-stars in movies fall in love so often? Because they're thrown together in "High Emotion" circumstances. They usually have to overcome some kind of obstacles together, like long shooting schedules, tyrant directors, and so on. They know that the filming of the movie is only for a limited time, and we tend to stress when we think something nice might be taken away from us. Finally, the filming of a movie is usually in some location that's not their home.

This is also the reason, people that work together fall in love, pairs figure skaters usually get married (Olympics on my mind!), and lovers that meet while traveling always stay sharp in each other's minds.

So what can we learn from all this?

{ Love } like you're traveling!

If we can figure out how to create similarly High Emotion* circumstances in our daily lives, just like the ones that come up naturally when we travel, then we'll be able to stay in love forever. Theoretically speaking... :)

One of our missions of living like you're traveling is to see beauty with a pair of 'fresh eyes', this doesn't just apply to your surroundings, your city, it also applies to the people you love. So how do we create these *High Emotion* situations in our everyday lives?

Glad you asked, because this brings us to our...

• • • THE LLYT CHALLENGE • • •

Let's do one specific thing for each one of these!

1- Surprise each other
Thinking up new "projects" to do together will give you opportunities to surprise each other. Like... putting together IKEA furniture (...then again let's scratch that), or signing up to learn scuba-diving, or having a baby together (ha!). Or simpler and less expensive then babies, how about just surprising your loved one with something that seems "off schedule" that you'll know will bring a smile to their face?

2- Learn something new about each other
Again, if we do the same thing every day as a couple, there is very little chance for you to learn something new about your partner. Let's break the routine. Get off the couch. Go to a shooting range and maybe your partner can learn about your aggressive Rambo qualities! Go cart racing? Camping? Simply doing something different together will render plenty of opportunities to learn something new about each other... and even for you to learn something new about yourself too. *Also, don't forget to ask probing questions about each other!...try to find out something you didn't know before about your partner!

3- Celebrate each other
And this is an EASY one! But one I'm sure we all easily forget. Give presents to each other for no reason. A little box of chocolates? Champagne with strawberries on a regular Wednesday night? A fancy night out for no reason! Or simply, give each other a compliment everyday for a week...!

And since this is a romantic Floral Friday, I'm remembering the TWO DOZEN long stemmed red roses that arrived at my house one Valentine's day when Vito and I were doing our inter-continental dating... Maybe I'll ask Vito to "surprise" me with something equally ridiculous (and FABULOUS!) this Valentine's day! The rose in the photo above is also a present from Vito on my birthday, but this time a more practical and long lasting version planted in our patio outdoor pots.

IDEA107: Channel the Romance of Nice with a Savory Pumpkin Soup

by Alla Feldman in SAVOR

nicoisesoup.jpg
nicoisesoup.jpg
Onthesamepage_blog_alla5.jpg

Vito and I discovered this simple yet divine dish for the first time in Nice, France, in a tiny restaurant a bit out of the old city center. This was a place of about 12 tables that served small dishes and the courses continued coming out until you said stop. There were no menus as the chef in the kitchen demanded your complete surrender. Bring it on- we said! This soup was the first dish to come out and we knew we were in for an evening of indulgence.

If you have been to Nice then you’re familiar with the delicious sunsets, the sea and the atmospheric, almost vintage glamour. I had a chance to go there a few years ago for a work. Being there in November I can’t say I had Nice all to myself, but I also didn’t have to fight my way through crowds of tourists, especially the fashionista kind who will trample you without pausing to scrape you off their stilettos. (I know how they behave, I’m one of them). This trip was exciting for a number of reasons, 1) it was my first time in Nice and I was extending my stay for the weekend to explore and 2) Vito would be joining me! This of course called for a sexy dinner a deux. You know the one you sit down to after a long day of walking around exploring the city, holding hands and taking cute pictures of each other. Then, magically, right as you get hungry you take a turn into a seemingly empty alley and voila’ you stumble upon a perfectly inviting little restaurant with delicious scents wafting through the open doors. Only to have your day culminate in such perfection takes careful planning.

When it comes to spontaneous romance in a lovely destination, I’ve got it broken down to a science! What? You thought romance just kinda happened on its own!? Oh no, no, you can’t leave important things like romantic dinners to chance!

Following a tip from a local, Vito and I strolled into the perfect little place precisely timed to relieve the aching feet and rumbling bellies.  Thankfully we had a reservation as the tiny restaurant filled up within 15 minutes or our arrival.  We sat at a tiny table for two lit with a candle next to an exposed brick wall.  Our view of the open kitchen let us peek at the busy happenings there.  Chalkboard menu stated only the sequence of the dishes to expect. It looked something like: soup, vegetable, fish, meat, vegetable, fish, meat.  If you violently opposed one of these categories, you could request a skip.  That was all the chef cared to reveal.  And so our evening began with “soup”, only the most aromatic, tastiest of soups garnished simply with crunchy toasted pumpkin seeds.

• • •

Every time I make this soup, it transports Vito and I back to that candle lit dinner in Nice. Now if only I had a chalkboard menu board and a few serious looking French men in my kitchen cooking up seven more courses…

• 1 medium onion
• Chicken stock (about 6 cups)
• 1 bay leaf
• ½ glass of orange juice (best if fresh squeezed)
• ½ teaspoon of paprika
• ½ teaspoon of ginger
• Salt and pepper to taste
• pinch of black and chili peppers
• ½ teaspoon of cinnamon (optional)
• ½ teaspoon of allspice (optional)

Garnish
• Toasted pumpkin seeds

Pissaladière or Nicoise Pizza:
(My simple interpretation of it will go nicely with the soup)
• 6 slices of a baguette (or your favorite bread)
• 2 white onions
• 2 tomatoes
• Anchovies (optional)

Prep/cook – Pumpkin Soup
Chop up the onion and saute’ it in 2 tsps of olive oil until translucent.  Add chopped peeled chopped carrots and saute’ for another minute.

Chop pumpkin into 1 inch cubes (it’s not necessary to peel it) then immediately add 1 cup of chicken stock and a laurier leaf. Stir then cover the pot for a few minutes to let everything get all steamy – This seems to be a big bonding moment for the main ingredients.  At first they’re thinking only of themselves and their importance in the recipe, but then they realize that it’s more productive and fun to play nice together in the delicious steam and become a team.

Add all the spices and the rest of the chicken stock, cover leaving a crack and cook until pumpkin is soft when you pierce it with a fork, about 15 minutes.

When the soup is ready take out the vegetables and puree them in a food processor or with a staff mixer.  Last but not least add the orange juice and adjust spices to taste.

Prep/cook – Pissaladière (Nicoise Pizza)
Cut peeled onion in half and then into rings and saute’ them in a bit of olive oil and butter.
Add a little splash of white wine or a bit of water to make sure onions don’t burn and come out soft.  Warm up a few slices of tomato right in the pan by pushing the onions to the side. Assemble your sandwich by heaping the onions on top of your toasted bread, then topping it with a slice of tomato and if you love anchovies throw few of them right on.

Serve
Serve the soup garnished with toasted pumpkin seeds and a hot Pissaladière style mini-sandwiches. Pair it with a nice Syrah and don’t forget to french kiss your partner before and after the meal!

Asking someone for dining advice seems like an easy way to be in the know about the best places to eat are, but in practice it’s a bit tricky. When giving advice, locals tend to tell you to eat where they think a TOURIST would enjoy eating.

Like that tacky cafe right in the main square. Or that old fashioned place that supposedly serves typical food but really is only frequented by tour bus crowds. Locals may have the best intention when giving you their advice, thinking you would not be interested in their neighborhood restaurant with a very casual vibe, packed every night and with great food and cozy atmosphere. Yes! This is exactly what we are interested in!

Fear not! we have perfected a 3-step approach to getting someone to tell you all about their favorite spots. To illustrate let’s reminisce over my first time in Nice, France.  I was there for a work conference with Vito joining me for the weekend. I knew that we’ll be packing in lots of sightseeing and after a full day of walking around you don’t want to take chances on not finding the perfect place to cozy up for dinner. Nice however, is full of restaurants, so how do you pick the right place?

I did not have much time during the conference to understand the lay of the land, so I marched over to the concierge, a charming man in his fifties, and asked him for a restaurant recommendation. I explained that I’ll be taking some clients out for dinner and if he can recommend: “Something nice, butnot too fancy.” He wrote the name of the place down for me without missing a beat. This was probably a pick from his list of restaurants to recommend to hotel patrons.  I then asked him for a second recommendation. This time I leaned in and told him that my guy was coming for the weekend and I wanted to go where you eat really well and not pay a lot. The Concierge looked up puzzled, I could see he understood that I did not want a restaurant from the “list,”  I was looking for something really special. “What is your favorite place to eat?”  I added to really drive the point home.

I’m not sure if it just seemed that way, but he gave a quick glance around the room as if making sure no one was watching him break a rule. He then looked at me and said in a lowered voice: “Well, here is a place you should try. It’s a bit out of the way, but the food is great.”  He wrote it down for me, then added:  “I go here with my girlfriend.”  The way he said it sounded like he was either asking me not to tell anyone about this restaurant, or not to tell his wife about his girlfriend.  (Though before I go spreading vicious rumors about the nice concierge, just for the record, I did glance at his hands and there was definitely no wedding band so probably he was not married after all.)

So here is the 3-part approach to getting a local to give you the best recommendation:

1 – Bait and Switch
Ask them a question, let them answer you then give them a different scenario and ask for one more recommendation.

2 – Magic combination: I want to eat GREAT FOOD and NOT PAY A LOT.
This particular one works really well in Italy, Spain, Greece…well pretty much all of Mediterranean and the Middle East, where getting a good deal for high quality is a sport.)

3 – Ask them what their favorite place is.
Now in case you’re dying to know what that secret place in Nice was, I have to confess that I don’t remember the name! This was after all five years ago and it is possible that the place may not even exist anymore. This is my point exactly, ask a local for the most up to date special location!

But we’ll hold your hand a little bit, just this once, and give you three restaurants that fit the perfect dinner location after a day of frolicking in Nice…authentic, cozy and romantic. But don’t take our word for it, ask a local yourself!

• La Merenda, 4 Rue Raoul Bosio
• Le Maquis, 7 Rue de l’Abbaye
